Summer safety tips and featured beach retreats

Image result for beach

Whether you are staying on beautiful Fort Myers Beach or just spending a day at the beach here are so must know summer beach safety tips.

1. Learn to swim and teach your children how to swim. Formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by as much as 88 percent among young children aged one to four, who are at greatest risk of drowning. But even when children have had formal swimming lessons, constant, careful supervision when in the water, and barriers to prevent unsupervised access are necessary to prevent drowning.
2. Learn Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). In the time it might take for lifeguards or paramedics to arrive, your CPR skills could save someone’s life.
3. Avoid drinking alcohol before or during swimming, boating, or water skiing.
4. Heed warning flags. Know the meaning of and obey warnings represented by colored beach flags, which may vary from one beach to another.
5. Know the terrain. Be aware of and avoid drop-offs and hidden obstacles in natural water sites. Always enter water feet first.
6. Avoid rip currents. Watch for dangerous waves and signs of rip currents, like water that is discolored and choppy, foamy, or filled with debris and moving in a channel away from shore. If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore; once free of the current, swim diagonally toward shore.
7. Look for lifeguards. Select swimming sites that have lifeguards whenever possible.
8. Be on the lookout. When kids are in or near water (including bathtubs), closely supervise them at all times, even when lifeguards are present. Adults should avoid distracting activities and using alcohol or drugs while supervising children. Adults should also use the buddy system.
9. Don’t hyperventilate. Swimmers should never hyperventilate before swimming underwater or try to hold their breath for long periods of time. This can cause them to pass out (sometimes called “shallow water blackout”) and drown.
       10. Fence it off. Barriers to pool access should be used to help prevent young children from gaining access to the pool area without caregivers’ awareness when they aren’t supposed to be swimming. Pool fences should completely separate the house and play area from the pool, be at least four feet high, and have self-closing and self-latching gates that open outward, with latches that are out of the reach of children.

Summer Vacation on Fort Myers Beach

Planning a family summer vacation can sometimes prove difficult.  However, if you book your stay at any of our 5 star rated retreats and included some of these fun beach activities you'll be sure to make a hit with everyone in the group.

Take beach pictures and build a sandcastle:
Make it a competition between two different sandcastles, or give the kids a time limit to finish. Need kids beach toysWE love this one with a zipper bag.

Image result for sandcastleOil drilling:
Tell the kids they have five minutes to dig as deeply in the sand as they can – the winner is the deepest.

Summer vacation activity: Build a sandman:
Build a traditional snowman model…using sand. This one works best if you bring a carrot for his nose. Then sit back and watch the double takes. Build a sandman with these cool beach shovel and pail sets.

Sand sculptures:
You can get really creative with these, sculpting turtles, aliens, or anything you want. Decorate with shells and pebbles for added effect. There’s some inspiration here.
Everyone loves body-boarding:
A body or boogie board for a child should be less than $20. Check out this site for tips on how to teach your kid to body-board. Once they’ve got the hang of body-boarding, you might want to try surfing. There are some good tips about modifying an adult long board to suit children here.

Castle battles:
Image result for beach volleyballTwo teams build a sandcastle each, about 20 meters apart, and place a flag (or towel) on top. Each team has to get the other’s flag. Very simple and a lot of fun.

Play beach games like Sand Bulls-eye:
Draw three circles in the sand and collect some stones and shells – players have to throw the stones into the circles for points (one for the big outer circle, two for the middle circle and three for the center circle).

Ping pong race at the beach:
Dig a series of sloping channels of equal length and big enough to take a ping pong ball. Put a colored ping pong ball at one end of each channel and race each other blowing the ball down the channel to the finish.

Beach volleyball:
Bring your own net or improvise with windbreakers or picnic baskets.

NEED A LAUGH?
Image result for Sebastian ManiscalcoSebastian Maniscalco
Date: May 14, 2017
Time: 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM EDT
Event Description:
Saying what we’re all thinking has always been Sebastian Maniscalco’s specialty. Except when he says it, it’s a whole lot funnier, and that has fans across North America showing up in droves for his shows and millions tuning in for his network specials. After more than a dozen sold-out performances in New York City’s comedy circuit in the last year alone, the Chicago-born-and-bred turned Los Angeles native tapped Manhattan as the backdrop for his newest comedy special on Showtime, SEBASTIAN MANISCALCO: WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? Maniscalco is the star and executive producer of the special, which was filmed at the historic Beacon Theatre. This hilarious hour full of skepticism that was released in October follows Sebastian’s 2014 Showtime standup special and DVD “Aren't You Embarrassed?” in which he offered up his witheringly sarcastic and exasperated take on modern behavior and etiquette. As the Dallas Observer noted, “Much of the material for his three comedy specials and tours comes from his astonishment with modern society’s unspoken rules and the juxtaposition of current culture against his upbringing in a hardworking, 'half-Sicilian, half-Italian' immigrant family.” Sebastian shares, “Those values ... have been a catalyst for my comedy. I’m like, 'Wow, I guess a lot of people didn’t have this type of upbringing' … that old world technique of, you know, nothing’s given to you, you’ve gotta work for everything you’ve done.” (From: sebastianlive.com) Tickets
